A Decade of Motherhood

10 years ago today. Winter was ending, the sun was shining, the snow had mostly disappeared and I was nearly two weeks overdue traipsing through puddles determined to not be pregnant another day. 40 long hours later you finally decided to join us earth side (oh how quickly I realized just how unprepared I was).

Today you are 10. Double digits. A decade old. It’s such a cliché to say how fast time flies and there is nothing like a tenth birthday to remind you of that very fact. Ten years I have watched you grow, change and transform from the shy boy who would clutch on to my side to the confident young man who isn’t so scared to make conversations with strangers anymore. You have an amazing mind, a sponge who remembers everything he reads and every day I am blown away by your knowledge. You have been an incredible help with not only your brothers, but with me as I try to wrangle the three of you on my own for the past months and for that I am grateful.

Ten years later, you realize how quickly an entire decade will pass you by. Every bath time and bedtime story. Every park date and movie night. Every road trip we took just you and I. We travelled half this country on more than one occasion, got lost in strange cities and you were always by my side ready for the next adventure. The hardest part is knowing that in another decade I will blink my eyes and upon opening them I will be face to face with a man who is ready to conquer the world on his own and I could only hope I have done the best job I could as your mother to make sure you are prepared for whatever journey you decide to embark on. Happiest of birthing days to you my sweet little Pisces.
